Building an HR ERP In-House
When we decided to build our own ERP rather than buy one off the shelf, plenty of people thought it was the harder road. In some ways it was. But building it in-house taught me more about how an organisation actually works than any packaged system ever could.
Start with the painful process, not the feature list
The temptation with any new system is to list every feature you could build. We did the opposite — we found the process that hurt the most. For us that was anything touching approvals: leave, expenses, project sign-offs. If we could make approvals fast and transparent, everything else would follow. So that's where we started.
Payroll is where trust is won or lost
Nothing tests an HR system like payroll. People forgive a clunky interface; they do not forgive a wrong paycheck. Getting payroll right — accurately, on time, every time — was the moment the system earned the team's trust. After that, adoption of everything else became easy.
Self-service changes the relationship
Adding a mobile employee self-service app changed how people related to HR. Instead of emailing a question and waiting, staff could check their own leave balance, submit a request, and see where it stood. Managers got the same visibility from their side. HR stopped being a bottleneck and started being a service.
The real lesson
The biggest lesson wasn't technical. It was that a system is only as good as how well it fits the way people already work. Building it ourselves meant we could shape it around our team — and keep shaping it as we learned.
